Beyond Words: The Ethical Compass of the AAITE National Codes of Ethics as a Guiding Star Across T&I Specializations

A code of ethics delineates the core values and principles that guide the decision-making process within a particular profession or among a group of professionals. Today, interpreters and translators in education have their own codes of ethics that encourage critical thinking, responsible judgment, and ethical considerations when navigating professional situations and dilemmas rather than dictating rigid regulations or imposing prescriptive behaviors. The significant effort invested in creating the National Codes of Ethics for Interpreters and Translators in Education identified Communicative Autonomy and Cultural Awareness as the ethical framework, enabled by the ethical application of critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and advocacy as a strategy. This effort also raised the issue of where these codes fall within the landscape of codes of ethics of other interpreting/translation specializations and associations. It also prompted a fundamental reconsideration of the significance of an ethical behavior on the part of Interpreters and translators across fields of specializations, and of the role that cultural awareness and advocacy play in their ethical conduct. Join us for an active, hands-on session where we will explore how to effectively operate within the framework of the National Codes of Ethics for Interpreters and Translators in Education and address ethical issues our roles may face in educational settings and beyond.
Marketing to Direct Clients
Speaker: Corinne McKay
Many freelancers would like to branch out into the direct client market in order to earn
more money and have direct contact with their clients, but it’s difficult to know where to start, how to identify potential direct clients, how to contact them, and how to set the direct client relationship up for success. In this three-hour workshop, we’ll look at how to market to direct clients in a sustainable way, focusing on tools like e-mail and LinkedIn that you already know how to use. We’ll also look at other options such as attending client-side events. You’ll complete the workshop with a list of action items that you can start on right away, with the goal of finding a new direct client in the next few months.

From Simple Clarification to Navigating Complex Communication Barriers: Practical Strategies for Intervening during Onsite and Remote Interpreting

An essential skill set for educational interpreters is knowing why, when, and how to stop interpreting to address communication barriers. Interpreters need specific strategies to navigate straightforward requests for clarification or repetition of terms, as well as complex cultural or ethical challenges. Remote interpreting further complicates these challenges. This interactive session will teach participants the strategic intervention model and provide real-life scenarios for practice. By the end of the session, participants should feel comfortable using a quick, effective intervention technique whenever they need to stop interpreting to solve a communication barrier, whether linguistic, ethical, cultural, or technological.
How to Prepare for and Pass an Interpreting Exam

Exams are a reality of life as a professional interpreter. In this session, we’ll look at:
* How to prepare a training plan for any type of interpreting exam
* Why so many interpreters fail certification exams
* How to make the best use of the available resources for the exam you’re planning to take
* How to give yourself the best chance of success on exam day
This master class is based on the presenter’s experience preparing for and passing (on the first try!) the Colorado Judicial Branch’s French court interpreter exam, the Glendon College Master of Conference Interpreting exit exams, and the SOSi immigration court interpreter exam.
Say Goodbye to Two Headsets on Two Different Devices: How to Use a Soft Phone to Streamline Remote Simultaneous Interpretation
Speaker: Michael Mudd
During this hands-on workshop participants will bring their computers and practice using Google Voice alongside another meeting platform to provide RSI from a single microphone on the same device. Note: This is a workshop on using your computer as a virtual phone, not an explanation of the built-in simultaneous functions on Zoom Webex and other platforms. Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to set up a Google Voice account and be familiar with using a headset microphone on their computer. More details on the pre-requisites along with detailed instructions will be shared a week before the event. We will also discuss other soft phone providers and technical considerations.
Is ASR your BFF? How to Make Automatic Speech Recognition Your New Best Friend for Simultaneous.
Speaker: Michael Mudd
In this session we will explore how real-time automatic speech recognition powered by AI can be used as an extra booth mate to help with simultaneous interpretation. Michael will preview some of the ASR platforms available and show the equipment and setup steps needed to get started. This workshop will also be of interest to translators who are looking for an easy way to generate a transcript of live speech.
Speaker Bios
Sameh Ragab is an ISO 17100 Lead Auditor and Certified Translation Provider, CAT Tools, and Terminology Management Expert, UN and World Bank Registered Translation Consultant, DTP specialist, and Certified Localizer. A renowned international speaker and trainer focusing on the technical side of translation and its technologies, Sameh has over 30 years of expertise in the translation and localization industry and sets the benchmarks for quality work, with a focus on Arabic and Middle Eastern translation, localization, and DTP services. Moreover, Sam has an outstanding history of training translators and localizers to excel using the latest CAT and Terminology Management tools in addition to Automation and AI.
Angélica Ramírez holds a Ph. D. in Translation from Alicante University. Her professional experience, which spans thirty years, includes translating books for children, research papers, popular science texts, web pages, films, documentaries, miniseries, and so on. She currently subtitles educational, promotional, and corporate videos, apart from being a professor for several postgraduate programs in Mexico. She is a member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and the Organización Mexicana de Traductores (OMT), and vice-president of the Asociación Mexicana de Traductores Literarios (AMETLI).
Giovanna Carriero-Contreras, a seasoned business solutions architect and operations management executive with over 30 years of expertise, stands out as a leader in the interpreting and translation industry. She is a sought-after national and international speaker, a seasoned translator and interpreter, an interpreter trainer, and a published author in the language industry. Her dynamic leadership as a founding member, past Chair, and current Chair-Elect of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE), as well as her involvement in other advocacy and standards development committees, has resulted in groundbreaking achievements.
Giovanna’s business acumen is evident in her success as the founder and visionary of Cesco Linguistic Services. As an interpreter trainer and advocate for language access, she co-authored key industry textbooks and played a pivotal role in releasing the AAITE National Codes of Ethics for Translators and Interpreters in Education. Giovanna is a member of ASTM Committee F43 on Language Services and Products, Chief of the US Delegation for the ISO/TC 37/SC 5 for Translation, Interpreting, and Related Technology Standards, Co-Chair of the ALC Language Access Committee, a member of the Advocacy Committees at ALC and ATA, the Standards Committee (ATA), the Education and Pedagogy Committee (ATA), and has recently been appointed to the Language Access Advisory Board at the State of Colorado.
She was honored as the 2020 Bill Daniels Ethical Leader of the Year and continues her work as an interpreter trainer and passionate advocate for language access.
Corinne McKay has been a full-time freelancer since 2002. She is ATA-certified for French to English translation, Colorado court-certified for French interpreting, and holds a Master of Conference Interpreting from Glendon College. In addition to her own translation and interpreting work, Corinne writes books and teaches classes for other freelancers. Her book, How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator, has sold more than 15,000 copies. Corinne served on the Board of the American Translators Association for seven years, including as ATA President from 2017-2019.
Michael Mudd is a Wyoming Native and grew up in Western Colorado. He lived in El Salvador during college and worked as a teacher in the Dominican Republic where he developed a passion for quality language access. He is a State and Federally Certified Spanish Court Interpreter, a CCHI Certified Healthcare Interpreter, and a conference interpreter with over 10 years of experience. Michael has a BA in Spanish from Regis University and a Certificate in Translation and Interpretation from the Community College of Aurora.
Michael has been an active member of the interpreter community in Colorado for years. He has enjoyed giving back to his profession by serving first as Treasurer, and later as President of the Colorado Association of Professional Interpreters (CAPI), prior to the merger that formed CITA. Michael continues to advocate for interpreters and translators as CITA Vice President. He is also excited to share resources and his experience with anyone interested in joining this fascinating and rewarding career. In his free time Michael enjoys spending time with family, volunteering at his church, riding his bicycle, hiking, and learning new words.Accordion Content
