When I was presented with the opportunity to attend the 60th annual ATA Conference in Palm Springs I knew I had to take it. Translating is something that I’ve wanted to do for years and although, as an undergraduate student with no professional experience, I was worried I would be out of place, it was an opportunity too good to pass up. I applied for and received funding from both the CTA student sponsorship program and the MSU Denver student travel program to help finance my conference registration and the trip to Palm Springs, for which I am eternally grateful because it afforded me a great deal of professional development, openings for networking, and inspiration.

Participating in this year’s 9th Annual CTA Conference has been no different from when I participated last year for the first time. I had a great first experience and I was able to network with a variety of different people. I was able to get questions answered I didn’t even know I had. Everyone from participants to staff were so helpful and approachable that I felt no fear asking them for help. Participating at this conference two years in a row was a complete success and I plan to keep attending it for years to come.

Although we live in a “global economy”, something as simple as getting cash for foreign travel can be fraught with expensive mistakes… and sometimes we only realize the cost long after the fact. We pay with a swipe of a card, but learn the true cost a month later from our bank statement. After living for a couple of months in Spain and France in 2017 and 2018, respectively, I have come up with some tips for the most economical, fee-minimized approach to international currency matters.

Gummi bears. Juicy, flavorful gummi bears. Albeit void of nutritional value, who can resist?
What does this have to do with filler words, you rightfully ask. Well, as Michael and Sabine point out, filler words, too, are void of “nutritional value” – they have no inherent meaning – but can add a flavorful punch to a sentence.
