Two weeks ago, I was among many CTA members attending the 59th Annual Conference of the American Translators Association in New Orleans. The ATA conference organizing team, lead by President-elect Ted Wozniak, worked tirelessly to pull off an amazing happening. Colorado was well represented this year. There was much interest in the promotional materials in our ATA Chapter display area and as many as fourteen CTA members presented at the conference.
For four days, more than 1500 attendees from all over the world enjoyed as many as 170 educational sessions in a variety of languages and specializations, tool support stations, an exhibit hall with companies and organizations promoting their products and recruiting our services, and endless networking opportunities.
ATA Board Elections
With two CTA members, ATA President Corinne McKay and ATA Secretary Karen Tkaczyk, already on the Board of Directors, we are proud that another CTA member has joined the ATA leadership team. Please help me congratulate Eve Lindemuth Bodeux for being elected for a 3-year term on the Board.
ATA Chapter Display
As an ATA Chapter, CTA received a dedicated area at the conference to display promotional materials. This was a great opportunity for us to promote the CTA Mentoring Program which will be entering its second year in 2019 and is accepting applications through December 1, 2018. In addition, we launched the Call for Papers for our own 9th Annual CTA Conference, which will be held April 26 through 28, 2019 in Boulder.
By the end of the four-day event, most flyers, as well as all pens and candy were gone, so hopefully our efforts pay off and we will receive some good conference proposals. Proposals for conference sessions will be accepted until January 15, 2019.
Metropolitan State University
For the second year in a row, the Colorado Interpreters & Translators Association sponsored three students in the Department of Modern Languages at Metropolitan State University of Denver to attend the ATA Conference.
Lauren Barclay, Michael Benson and Clint Horan were awarded the sponsorship during the Annual MSU Translation/Interpretation Colloquium on September 28, 2018, organized by Wendy Gallagher, Senior Lecturer at MSU. Stay tuned for a report of their personal experiences at this year’s ATA conference which will be published right here on the CTA blog.
In the meantime, enjoy this recap of ATA59. We hope to see you next year in Palm Springs, California!
